Amli fish, also known as "Chela" fish, refers to several small, silvery fish species belonging to the Cyprinidae family, particularly in the Abramidinae subfamily. Three common species found in India, especially in the Poona district, are Chela boopis, Chela clupeoides, and Chela phulo. These fish are appreciated for their delicate, silvery appearance and are considered a food delicacy. They are often found in still waters of lakes and tanks, and their presence in large numbers can indicate the presence of other game fish like Barbus or Labeo.
